SC508 – The Key Principles of Speed Training

Course Overview

This course is very important to the fitness training of athletes and field as well as court sports players. Being skilful is most imprtant in all field and court sports but if the skilful player can also be fast then he or she is a special talent.

Research has shown that in elite sport team players in field sports make between 10 and 20 sprints in a game at full speed. Most other runs or sprint efforts are not at full speed because the player is visually active in reading the movements of the ball, opponents and team mates. This spatial, temporal and playing awareness ensures that the greatest number of sprints in a game is at sub-maximal pace. But none-the-less they are fast. Therefore the players have to train their ability to sprint fast, react quickly, turn effectively and be first to the breaking ball as often as possible in a game.

Training for speed is governed by the Principles of Speed. The objective of this course is to ensure that the fitness coach understands the key principles of speed and the scientific support of their implementation.
