Tipperary S2S – Workshop 1

Workshop 1

The three topics covered in this work:

  • Programme Introduction
  • Athletic Development of the Player
  • Organising and Delivering a Juvenile Training Session

Topic 1 – Programme development

This presentation or talk outlines the objectives and design of the Tipperary S2S programme.

Topic 2 – Athletic Development

Athletic development refers to the overall physical development of the young player including the development of the physical literacy and functional competence necessary to participate in, enjoy and become proficient at any individual or team sport. Athletic development must be seen as the basis for learning the skills of the game more proficiently and more rapidly than normal.

“Developing physical athleticism is like developing mental intelligence; both require a broad array of skill proficiencies which come together to create proficient net output (Klika, 2010).

This lecture covers the importance of the three pillars of coordination, leg strength and speed and agility development of the player – practical applications of which will be demonstrated in the practical sessions in workshops 2, 3 and 4.

The more athletic a player is the more skilful that player can become. Skill is the player’s ability to choose and perform the right technique at the right time, regularly and with a minimum of effort.

The importance of athletic development cannot be over-emphasised enough. The basis of all sport skills are the fundamental motor skills and the basic functional competence skills including coordination and leg strength that the player needs to develop between the ages of 5 and 10 years.

This presentation covers these importance of athletic development in great detail.

3 – The Training Session

The juvenile raining must be child centred to be successful and it needs to be based on the stage of development of the young players. The session is the vehicle that the coach uses to coach and develop the players. For young athletes the training session must include a warm-up, exercises, games, skill and fitness activities as well as a cool-down with the overall aim of enjoyment by the players.

The underlying principles of planning and delivering a training session for juvenile players or athletes should be the stage of development of the children, their motor skill and functional competence level as well as the length of their attention span.
