Speed

Speed

Outside of skill, speed is the key element in most sports especially those played on a field, a court or a track. Many coaches do not understand the importance of getting to the ball first. Wonderful or long Physical Fitness sessions do not develop speed. Speed can only be developed by running at top speed or executing a skill at top speed. It can only be developed when the athlete or player is fresh.

As Ty Cobb suggested “speed is a great asset; but it’s greater when it’s combined with quickness – and there’s a big difference”. The team that neglects speed training will execute the sports skills slower than usual until eventually the manager or coach wakes up to the fact that neglecting speed infiltrates many other aspects of sport – turning, jumping, kicking, striking, tackling, catching and even decision making.
